Warning Signs

 
  • Clinical depression or other mental illness
  • Substance abuse or physical/sexual abuse
  • Prior suicide attempt
  • Family history of suicide
  • Having firearms in the house
  • Older adults who have sudden losses of loved ones
  • War/Combat veterans
  • Talking about being hopeless, helpless, or worthless
  • Losing interest in things one used to care about
  • Sudden, unexpected switch from being very sad to being very calm
  • Giving things away, putting affairs in order
  • Saying things like, "It would be better if I wasn't here."
  • Talking about suicide; having a plan and means of committing suicide
